Measure at the Distance That Actually Matters
A reading taken with the meter pressed directly against a router or appliance tells you almost nothing useful — of course it's high right next to the source. What matters is the reading at the distance you'll actually spend time at: bed height in the bedroom, desk height where you work, the chair you sit in each evening.
Move Slowly and Watch for Peaks, Not Just a Resting Number
Many sources spike rather than staying constant — a Wi-Fi router transmitting in bursts, a motor cycling on and off. A single instantaneous reading can miss this entirely. Watch the meter for at least thirty seconds to a minute in any spot you're actually assessing, rather than glancing and moving on.
Compare Relative Changes, Not Absolute Numbers in Isolation
